Worldwide Day of Play 2012

Go out and play!

With all the computer and television distractions that anchor kids indoors, telling them to go out and play may seem like an odd message. But Nickelodeon has long encouraged kids to stay active and healthy and its Worldwide Day of Play encourages kids and their parents to get up, get out and go play, especially outdoors.

The RP Lee Youth Center hosted the Worldwide Day of Play from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, September 22, in Patriot Park, located on the north side of the Youth Center. It was a perfect fall day, a prelude to the school season and a fun event for the families, many of whom had recently PCS’d to Peterson Air Force Base.

An estimated 1,700 children of all ages — including the canines — streamed steadily into the park for the event. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, and neighbors stopped by, many from the newly developed Tierra Vista community.

Activities included a huge inflatable obstacle course, games and human hamster balls. Special guest, Sox the Fox, who loves to be outdoors and active, posed for photos and gave fans his signature high-five.

At the event, people snacked on watermelon and healthy foods. Whole Foods handed out a variety of organic fruits and snacks – bananas, oranges, grapes, chips and bars – and offered a craft activity where kids planted veggies in compostable pots to take home with them. Door prizes for the event included certificates of free bowling, golf, and swimming from the base 21 FSS facilities.

The RP Lee Youth Center also handed out information about FitFactor, the U.S. Air Force’s fitness program, which encourages youth, teens and families to be active every day of the year and make healthy nutrition choices.

Worldwide Day of Play was free to the military community and inspired the incentive to turn off the television, shut down the computer, put down the cell phone, and come play with us – outdoors!
