A team of merry elves transported their North Pole workshop to the RP Lee Youth Center gym for the inaugural Winter Wonderland event from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, December 7, for children ages 2 to 12 years and their friends and families. Admission was $5/family plus a donation of a non-perishable food item … or a pet item (pet toys, dog blankets, dog/cat food, towels, cat litter, etc.) from each child.
More than 325 military members braved the arctic temperatures to attend the first Winter Wonderland and to drop off their donations. All were rewarded with special gifts from Wendy’s, Mr. Frosty, and our generous sponsors.
Our Keystone Club donated the non-perishable food items to the PAFB First Sergeants’ food pantry for airmen in need, and as part of the Torch Club’s national project, Protecting Animals with Service (PAWS), all those donations of pet items support shelters and animals in need.
While the reindeer napped on the roof, jolly old Santa posed for photos and listened patiently to the wish lists of excited children sitting on his lap.
The Spirit of the Season shone bright in the smiles of delighted children, who crafted an assortment of holiday gifts — one to take and one to donate — munching on tasty treats and singing carols over the roving microphone held captive by one of Santa’s helpers.
A flash mob erupted in the middle of the festivities with dancing elves, attendees, and our sponsors kicking up their heels to the tune of “We Are Family,” laughing all the way.
The military families had a wonderful time at this first-ever Winter Wonderland, an event made possible through the generous support of our sponsors.
