Team Pete Sports & Field Day, June 16

[Stand by while video loads — adjust settings for better viewing]

The Team Pete Sports & Field Day was held Thurs., June 16. This huge event involved nearly 3,000 people in all and built unit camaraderie. It revolved around two important things: the variety of sports to participate in and the picnic lunch.

SPORTING EVENTS

It was play time! From archery to darts, from dominoes to golf, and from a 10k bike race to swimming, Sports & Field Day offered something for everyone’s interest and fitness level. Participants chose from 40-plus scheduled events. To see the complete list of events for the day, please click here.

The great news is that personnel were excused from duty to participate in Sports & Field Day activities.

THE FOOD

The hub of the Sports & Field Day was Capt. David Lyon Memorial Park, on the southwest corner of Peterson Blvd. and Ent Ave. It was a great place to hang out because that’s where the free refreshments, free picnic, music, sponsors and emcee were.

FREE PASSES TO THE NATIONAL PARKS

A representative from the National Park Service was at Team Pete Sports & Field Day to issue FREE park passes to active duty military and lifetime passes to disabled veterans.

NPS CELEBRATING 100 YEARS – On August 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed the act creating the National Park Service, a new federal bureau in the Department of the Interior responsible for protecting the 35 national parks and monuments. Today, more than 20,000 National Park Service employees care for America’s 400+ national parks and work with communities across the nation to help preserve local history and create close-to-home recreational opportunities.

AWARDS, VOLUNTEERS

The competitions concluded somewhere around 3 p.m. and points were tallied. [Points are awarded for competitive participation and for volunteers.] Awards / trophies were presented at an official ceremony at 4:15 p.m. in the Colorado Pizza & Sports Grill (formerly Stripes Pub).

EVENT SPONSORS

Without the support of our generous sponsors, Sports & Field Day would not be possible. At the very least, we wouldn’t have any free water or soda, no food at all for the picnic lunch, no money to buy the awards/trophies or have them engraved, and no cool prizes to give away. Our sponsors support this event and many others throughout the year.
