  • Art submission week –April 19 – April 30 at STARBASE Peterson.
  • Art on display May 7 – July 15 in various locations on base.

SPACED OUT! is a brand new week-long, spaced-themed program coming to the Peterson-Schriever Garrison starting Friday, May 7, National Space Day, and concluding Saturday, May 15, International Astronomy Day.

The theme – space – is inspired by our being the home of Space Force.  But we are also inspired by astronauts who were able to successfully live in a confined space aboard the International Space Station for 200 to 300+ days in a row.

That makes us think of us having to comply with stay-at-home orders, practice social distancing, and self-quarantining.  And we wonder:  How did astronauts basically live in a tin can for almost a year and stay sane without being able to go outside?

“When you’re confined in a small space you need an outlet that isn’t work or maintaining your environment …. ” Astronaut Scott Kelly wrote.  “You can practice an instrument (I just bought a digital guitar trainer online), try a craft, or make some art.  Astronauts take time for all of these while in space.”  A hobby?  Art?  In space?

So, as part of SPACED OUT! we are encouraging you to create a space-themed work of art that we will exhibit in various locations on base.

WHAT MEDIUM?  –  Your art can be of any medium of your choice – a painting, drawing, wood carving, a mobile, collage, fabric art, clay sculpture, lettering/calligraphy, charcoal, etc.

It can even be performance art – a musical composition, a dance, a song, a poem, a story – that you will perform one evening of the week-long program.

WHAT SIZE  –  Any size.  It can be as small as a quarter or as large as a mural.

HOW TO HANG / DISPLAY  –  All pieces of art must arrive “Ready to Display.”  For wall-hung pieces, this means ready-to-hang with D-Rings or D-Rings and Wire.  For table-top and free-standing pieces, this means ready-to-place with no need of any adhesive, wax, or balancing wires.

THEME  –  The theme is SPACE.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?  –  This is open to all eligible users of the Peterson-Schriever Garrison – all ages, any ranks, DoD civilians, contractors, retirees.

REGISTRATION FORM & LIABILITY WAIVER – Click here to open the fillable Registration Form with Liability Waiver.   We will have forms available when you drop off your art, and you are welcome to fill out a Registration Form by hand at that time.
